Background of the Study
The quality of healthcare services provided to geriatric patients is critical to ensuring their well-being, especially as they age and become more susceptible to chronic illnesses. In Jigawa State, where the elderly population is increasing, understanding how geriatric patients perceive the healthcare services they receive is essential to improving the quality of care. These perceptions may be influenced by various factors, including the accessibility of healthcare facilities, the quality of medical professionals’ services, and the adequacy of resources available for elderly care (Aliyu et al., 2023).
Geriatric patients are often faced with a variety of healthcare needs that are different from those of younger populations, including the management of multiple chronic conditions, age-related disabilities, and mental health issues like depression or dementia (Sani et al., 2024). As such, it is crucial to explore their perceptions of healthcare services to identify gaps in care, areas for improvement, and barriers to accessing quality care. This study aims to assess the perceptions of geriatric patients regarding the healthcare services they receive in Jigawa State, focusing on the availability, quality, and patient-centeredness of services.
Statement of the Problem
While healthcare services for the elderly are critical in promoting longevity and quality of life, the perceptions of geriatric patients about these services in Jigawa State remain largely unexplored. The elderly often encounter unique challenges such as limited mobility, financial constraints, and healthcare infrastructure inadequacies, all of which can influence their satisfaction with healthcare services. Understanding their perspectives will be vital to improving service delivery and ensuring that elderly patients receive comprehensive and compassionate care.
Objectives of the Study
To assess the perceptions of geriatric patients regarding the healthcare services they receive in Jigawa State.
To identify the factors that influence the satisfaction of geriatric patients with healthcare services in Jigawa State.
To recommend strategies for improving healthcare services for the elderly in Jigawa State based on patient feedback.
Research Questions
How do geriatric patients perceive the healthcare services they receive in Jigawa State?
What factors influence the satisfaction of geriatric patients with healthcare services in Jigawa State?
What improvements can be made to healthcare services for elderly patients in Jigawa State based on their perceptions?
Research Hypotheses
Geriatric patients in Jigawa State have mixed perceptions regarding the quality of healthcare services provided to them.
Factors such as access to healthcare facilities, healthcare personnel attitude, and available resources significantly influence geriatric patients' satisfaction with healthcare services.
Recommendations based on geriatric patients’ feedback will lead to improvements in healthcare services for the elderly in Jigawa State.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on geriatric patients residing in Jigawa State. It may be limited by access to rural areas, the diverse healthcare settings, and the potential for self-reporting bias from elderly participants.
